Fundamental Nursing Skills 3 continues from Fundamental Nursing Skills 2 developing student's clinical knowledge and skills with a focus on the fundamental clinical nursing skills of performing safe medication administration and specimen collection. Students will be well prepared for ensuring that the correct medication is administered to the correct patient, in the correct dose, by the correct route as well as being aware that all medications have side effects. Students will then be introduced to the skills required to collect, test and read results of a range of body specimens.
This course will provide students with an understanding of human energy requirements and the nutrients necessary to maintain health. Guidelines for healthy eating and dietary requirements will be introduced. Students will also study the changing nutritional requirements through different life stages along with strategies to maintain a healthy life balance and prevent disease. The impact of culture and religion on nutritional health will be explored as well as that of physical activity.
Adult Nursing is divided into three courses in which students will develop competencies required to care for adult patients with a variety of disorders, in a safe manner, using the nursing process. In Adult Nursing 1, students will focus on the nursing care of adults experiencing disorders related to regulatory mechanisms of fluid and electrolyte imbalance. They will also be introduced to adults experiencing communicable diseases and disorders of the musculoskeletal and the reproductive systems. Students will develop knowledge and skills required for holistic assessment and patient care management of these disorders, using the nursing process. Emphasis is placed on integrating therapeutic communication skills and critical thinking skills in the students’ development of competencies as well as ensuring evidence-based nursing care. This course includes classroom and laboratory simulation activities.
Human Pathology is the study of disease. The courses are designed to provide students with an understanding of the consequences of pathologic processes on the structure and function of the human body. Human Pathology 3 will introduce students to diseases related to the genito-urinary system including infections, obstruction, tumors, immunological disorders, and renal failure. This will be followed by an introduction to common diseases of the female and male reproductive systems and finally, students will be introduced to the endocrine system and the different diseases that impact the different organs that are parts of this body system. Each body system will be introduced with a brief revision of the relevant anatomy and physiology.
This course provides students with an overview of pharmacology with an emphasis on clinical applications within the context of the nursing practice. It explores indications, modes of action, effects, contraindications and interactions for selected medications related to systems of the body. There will also be an emphasis on antimicrobial resistance as well as stewardship.
Human Pathology is the study of disease. The courses are designed to provide students with an understanding of the consequences of pathologic processes on the structure and function of the human body. Human Pathology 4 will introduce students to diseases related to the neurological system including infections, trauma, and specific disorders. Students will also be introduced to common diseases of the eyes and those diseases related to the ears, nose, and throat system. Common conditions of the skin and an overview of disorders relating to nutrition as well as childhood disorders will be covered in this course. Each body system will be introduced with a brief revision of the relevant anatomy and physiology.
This course introduces students to the core concepts and basic principles in microbiology and their relevance to human health. Topics include an overview of infectious agents and microbe-human interactions, as well as basic concepts of viruses, bacteria, and fungi and how and where they can cause infection in humans. Students will also have a chance to visit a microbiology laboratory to develop a greater understanding of the importance of quality specimen collection and correct transport, processing of identification of organisms, and provision of results.
